Merchant Accounts Industry News

Credit card fraud is one of the biggest concerns among merchants today. It is important to know how to avoid costly incidents of fraud for more than one reason.

Normally, when a credit card payment is processed the money from the transaction is deposited into the merchant’s account. When there is a problem with the transaction, however, the merchant may be subjected to a chargeback. A chargeback occurs when money is deducted from the merchant’s account, which can happen for a variety of reasons. Double charges, expired credit cards, bank errors, and customer dispute are all common reasons for a chargeback. Besides the loss of money to the merchant, chargebacks have a second downside. If a merchant has too many chargebacks, his or her merchant account can be lost. The merchant will also be placed on a list (the TMF-MATCH list) which all merchant account processors have access to. A merchant on the TMF-MATCH list will not be approved for a merchant account. Avoiding chargebacks and fraud is clearly a priority for any merchant who accepts credit card payments.
