Major categories of merchants include:
Retail – in the world of merchant accounts, “retail” is defined as a merchant whose primary mode of acceptance is a face to face transaction where the buyer swipes their card through a terminal. A brick and mortar store, such as a grocery store, gas station, dine in or take out restaurant, salons, and a host of other types of merchants fall into the category “retail”. Retail transactions are considered the most secure form, as the card and buyer are present, and retail merchants get the best overall rates.
MOTO (Mail order / Telephone order) – MOTO merchants are merchants where the majority of their transactions are conducted in a “card not present” manner, and the account number is manually keyed in to a terminal or virtual terminal. Some examples of merchants would be pizza delivery, towing services, caterers, or locksmiths. These kind of merchants are typically best served with a virtual terminal. Also, with expanding use of wireless terminals and mobile processing, many merchant
Wireless: Wireless is an ever growing area for credit card acceptance. Wireless merchants are essentially retail merchants that are processing “in the field”, where they are going to their buyers location instead of their buyer coming to their store. Examples would be vendors at fairs or trade shows, merchants who perform “house calls” such as plumbers, locksmiths or food delivery, or on the road sales reps that conduct sales at their buyer’s homes or businesses. These merchants take swiped transactions by using a wireless terminal, a laptop / USB card reader combination, or more recently, via a iPhone, Droid, Blackberry or other smart phone device. This is a great step forward as it produces a more secure transaction for both the buyer (as swiped transactions are very difficult to dispute) and the seller (no chance of hard copies of card numbers getting lost). And the biggest benefit – savings! Transactions that would otherwise need to be keyed in can now be swiped, resulting in lower qualified processing rates associated with swiped transactions instead of mid or non qualified rates associated with keyed transactions.
E-Commerce: Ecommerce is defined as any merchant where the majority of their transactions come in via a website shopping cart. These orders route into a gateway service and to the processor to provide a seamless transaction with an instant response to validate or decline a given transaction. As well, your gateway service will include a virtual terminal to allow you to manually process credit cards for phone orders or custom orders. Ecommerce is an area that we see far too many merchants paying too much! Beyond just the rates, there are some areas we can coach you in to get your overall processing cost down.
